Inside materials like iron are tiny regions called magnetic domains. You can think of them as lots of microscopic arrows. Normally, these arrows point in different directions, so their effects mostly cancel each other out.

When a magnet comes nearby, its magnetic field can cause many of these domains to line up. This makes the material behave more like a magnet, allowing it to be attracted toward the magnet.

But here is a surprising fact: not every metal is attracted to magnets. Iron, nickel, and cobalt are strongly magnetic, while metals such as copper, aluminum, gold, and silver are not attracted in the same obvious way.
